Machu Picchu Day Trip From Cusco
Before planning your trip, you may want to know a little more about the weather that features Cusco and Machu Picchu, which will be very useful for preparing your visit.
We have 2 very marked seasons during the year:
- Rainy Season. – Also known as the “low season”, it covers the months of November to March. It is characterized by the presence of rain and by the reduced presence of travelers (ideal for those who want to avoid the crowds and take advantage of deals).
- Dry season.– It is characterized by sunny days and very cold nights (up to -5 ° C). It’s also known as the high season by the enormous amount of visitors who arrive at Machu Picchu. It covers from May to September.
Once you have identified the season in which to visit Machu Picchu, then it is time to prepare your day trip to Machu Picchu.
There are 2 train companies that offer the route to Machu Picchu, one is Peru Rail and the other Inca Rail. The main difference between these two brands is the frequency of their trains, nevertheless, both services and rates are quite similar.
Two train stations are available, one in Poroy (25 min from Cusco) and the other from Ollantaytambo (1 hour and a half from Cusco). If you have several days, we recommend that you visit the Sacred Valley and spend a night there, it will allow you to get used to the altitude (see more about altitude sickness in this post) since the Sacred Valley is lower than Cusco (2800 meters above sea level), and you’ll take the train from Ollantaytambo station the next day. If by the contrary, you have only a few days, then you can start your day trip to Machu Picchu from the station of Poroy.
